  • :: Happy Birthday to Me ::

    Alvin and I celebrated my birthday eve at Upstairs at Bouley Bakery.  Critics have called this tiny eatery "jumbled" and "schizophrenic", but it was a perfect spot for me -- I can always have a little of everything.  The menu featured sushi, Japanese, New American, and Italian dishes.  Everything we ordered was delicious.  Simple preparations of the main ingredient, paired with sophisticated  sauces and sides which complemented the flavor.  Two of my favorites:

    Grilled lamb chop with zucchini mint purée, potato purée and sherry glazed roast eggplant
    Kamo Nsu -- grilled Japanese eggplant and marinated Long Island duck breast with a mustard dashi and micro greens

    My actual birthday started out with blueberry pancakes and 2 dozen red roses.  We went hunting for my gift that afternoon.  Had a cheeseburger.  Then headed out to celebrate with a bunch of my friends.

    Alvin had set up a prix fixe dinner at Markt, a Belgian place in Chelsea (was in Meatpacking District).  Great food, great beers...and suprisingly fantastic desserts.  There was also a giant red velvet cake involved at the end.  My friends were saying it reminded them of our wedding -- neverending food.  We ended up giving away half the cake to other tables since we just couldn't look at food anymore.

    Fire hazard.  They were short 4 candles too!

    13 + food + beer

    Way too big

    What too much sugar does...

    Post-dinner festivities took place at the Flatiron Lounge, where I was the last one standing at the end of the night.  I guess even though I'm getting old, my friends are even older!  Haha...

    Thanks, Hon -- I had an awesome birthday
